Timeline for Building Name Discussion
November 2022 – Parents Advisory Committee to the Superintendent requests that the district provides more information on the naming of the district schools and the history of the people the schools are named after.
December 2022 – Board of Education discuss topic and authorizes Superintendent to lead the effort to better understand the people whom each of the Poughkeepsie City School District elementary buildings are named after.
January 2023 – The Poughkeepsie Public School Library System is requested to help in providing information about the Poughkeepsie City School District schools.
January 2023 – Rebecca Edwards, Vassar College professor, contacts Dr. Rosser with an interest to support the Districts research efforts.
February 2023 – District researches New York State Education process for submitting paperwork for the changing of school names.
May 2023 – Ms. Edwards provides Dr. Rosser with the findings of Vassar College’s research.
June/July 2023 – Dr. Rosser provides information to the Board of Education for their initial review.
October 2023 – Members of the board informally converse about Vassar’s research and other Poughkeepsie City School District school history documents.
November 2023 – Board receives request from Celebrating the African Spirit to change name of Morse Elementary School.
November 2023 – Board discusses calendaring the topic for its January 2024 meeting.
January 2024 – Board discusses topic at the following meetings:
- January 3 – Board of Education Regular Meeting
- January 17 – Board of Education Workshop Meeting
- January 24 – Policy Committee
February 2024 – Board discusses topic at the following meetings:
- February 3 – Board Retreat
- February 7 – Board of Education Regular Meeting
