PMS students encouraged to RISE this year at PBIS assemblies
PBIS, or positive behavioral interventions and supports, “is all about making our school a place where everyone feels safe, respected and ready to learn,” Assistant Principal for Climate and Culture Danielle Green told an auditorium full of students Friday. “It’s a way to help us remember to be kind, make good choices and work together so we can all have a great school day.”

The Halloween event was the first organized by the newly reformed PTA, and more events are on the way.

Class recognizes Hispanic mathematicians
In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs Sept. 15-Oct. 15, Michael Emard has been starting each of his sixth-grade math classes with a brief presentation celebrating a mathematician of Hispanic descent.

Yondr pouch program to begin at middle school
Each morning, the students will be required to lock their phones away in a Yondr pouch, a padded bag that seals with a magnetic lock. The pouches can only be unlocked when they leave at the end of the day, or in the event of an emergency with the help of an assistant principal.

More than 200 families visited Poughkeepsie Middle School Thursday for a sixth-grade orientation event.

Thirteen rising Poughkeepsie Middle School students are receiving lessons in self-confidence, networking and leadership, and forming friendships before beginning at a new school.

PMS students eye success moving up to high school, beyond
For 157 Poughkeepsie students, middle school is over. And while Tuesday’s moving up ceremony was a time for laughter, celebration and looking back on classroom fun, many high school-bound Pioneers said they know the hard work of graduating high school is just beginning.

State Ed officials visit Poughkeepsie to see Ampact tutoring impact
Representatives from the New York Board of Regents, New York State Education Department, as well as Rochester-based childhood education group Roc the Future Alliance, visited Poughkeepsie schools to observe how the partnership between Poughkeepsie and Ampact may be replicated in other districts in need across the state.

Sophomore earns BOCES Student of Distinction honor
Jae La Francis, a sophomore from the Poughkeepsie City School District attending BOCES’ Resilience Academy, was named BOCES Student of Distinction for the month of November. She was honored with a certificate at the Poughkeepsie Board of Education meeting Nov. 20.

Around the Poughkeepsie City School District, many classes held special Thanksgiving events that focused on friends, family and food.

District, BOE discuss state assessments, solutions
As it moves forward in its mission of elevating student achievement, the district is using last year's state assessments as a benchmark for the trajectory of student success rates, though other data, including I-Ready evaluations, Regents testing results and attendance figures all play a role.

District increases outreach, launches incentive program to curb absences
The Poughkeepsie City School District is increasing outreach to find solutions for chronic absenteeism, and introducing an attendance incentive program beginning next month. The moves come as data from the first two months of the school year showed an increase in chronic absenteeism compared to the same period last year, but also an increase in the average number of students attending school daily.

Toy, coat, shoe donations wanted for holiday drive
Toy donation boxes will be in every school; coat and shoe donations can be brought to the Parent Empowerment Center. All items will be distributed at Community Schools' holiday celebration Dec. 20.

Community Schools to start food pantry in January
Community Schools in the process of creating an emergency food pantry at the Parent Empowerment Center at Poughkeepsie Middle School, with the goal of expanding to a second location at the Parent Empowerment Center at Warring Elementary School when construction is completed.

PCSD evaluating how it serves students with exceptionalities
PCSD will be undergoing a comprehensive evaluation of how best to address the needs of its student population, with changes already underway, and the Board of Education has created a committee to address these issues.
