The Board of Education on Tuesday approved a budget proposal that would remain under the tax cap while still increasing the amount spent on general instruction by more than $2.8 million. This is despite expectations state foundational aid will grow by just 2% next year, the minimum allocation.

The idea, Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education Greg Mott said, is to “reimagine and repurpose” the district’s structure and resources to best serve students’ needs amid a challenging financial landscape. The district is taking these measures while preserving positions within each school building and is, in fact, adding staffing.

Geoffrey Canada visits Poughkeepsie: ‘Your moment to change history’
Canada led an event titled “Putting Kids First: Unlocking the Promise of Poughkeepsie,” hosted by the Poughkeepsie Children’s Cabinet and the Poughkeepsie City School District . Canada discussed how and why he founded the Harlem Children’s Zone, the importance of a community taking responsibility for its own success without an outside savior and why he sets attending college as the goal for each child that comes through his programs.

Four propositions on budget, board ballot
The list of propositions was finalized by the Board of Education at its meeting Wednesday, where Superintendent of Schools Dr. Eric Jay Rosser and Interim Assistant Superintendent of Business Margarita Lekaj presented an updated draft of the proposed district budget for 2025-26.
