Honor Roll students visit 'A Christmas Carol'
On Dec. 12, Poughkeepsie Middle School recognized its high-achieving students with a field trip to the Rhinebeck Performing Arts Center to see a live performance of “A Christmas Carol.”

PMS students encouraged to RISE this year at PBIS assemblies
PBIS, or positive behavioral interventions and supports, “is all about making our school a place where everyone feels safe, respected and ready to learn,” Assistant Principal for Climate and Culture Danielle Green told an auditorium full of students Friday. “It’s a way to help us remember to be kind, make good choices and work together so we can all have a great school day.”

Yondr pouch program to begin at middle school
Each morning, the students will be required to lock their phones away in a Yondr pouch, a padded bag that seals with a magnetic lock. The pouches can only be unlocked when they leave at the end of the day, or in the event of an emergency with the help of an assistant principal.

More than 200 families visited Poughkeepsie Middle School Thursday for a sixth-grade orientation event.

Progress in reducing chronic absenteeism; community survey available
Through December, the percentage of students characterized as chronically absent was down more than 18 percentage points compared to a year ago. And, two schools – the Early Learning Center and Krieger Elementary – have been honored as the first two winners of the district’s attendance incentive program.

PHS student saves life using lesson learned in school
On Dec. 6, Victor Nelson III, a Poughkeepsie High School junior, saved a man from a drug overdose in a barbershop by administering Narcan. He had learned how to do it in Sean Lauder’s health class this semester. After the lesson, Lauder supplied each student two doses of Narcan and advised them to carry one around with them – you never know when you may need it.

Survey: How should 3 PCSD buildings be renamed?
The Poughkeepsie City School District Board of Education’s Ad-Hoc Committee Building Names Study Group will recommend three elementary school buildings – the Samuel F.B. Morse, Gov. George Clinton and Christopher Columbus schools – should be renamed. They're asking for the community's input on what the new names should be.

Poughkeepsie in spotlight at national Department of Education conference
Poughkeepsie Children’s Cabinet Executive Director Jill Gomez spoke at the two-day event’s opening plenary, and Community Schools Executive Director Natasha Brown and Interim Administrator Jessica Ortiz took part in workshops and operated a table at which they discussed the department’s work.

PCSD launches ‘Attendance Matters’ community campaign
The Poughkeepsie City School District is launching the “Attendance Matters” awareness campaign, a communitywide effort to encourage every student to attend school regularly and have the best chance for success.
