Are you thinking about becoming a Board Member?
The Annual School Budget Vote and Election will take place on Tuesday, May 21, 2024. There are two open seats for a three-year term to begin on July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2027. Candidates for the Board of Education shall be nominated by a petition directed to the District Clerk which is signed by at least 100 qualified voters of the District. A qualified voter is a person who is a citizen of the United States, at least 18 years of age, and a resident of the school district for at least 30 days prior to the date of the Budget Vote. A qualified voter does not need to be a registered voter.
Policy 2120.1: CANDIDATES AND CAMPAIGNING
Nominations
Candidates for the office of members of the Board of Education shall be nominated by petition. Such petition shall be directed to the District Clerk, shall contain the signatures and addresses of at least 100 qualified voters of the district, and shall state the name and residence of the candidate. Each petition shall be filed with the District Clerk not later than 20 days preceding the Annual Meeting and Election at which the candidates so nominated are to be elected.
The names of the candidates shall be arranged in order as determined by a drawing by lot supervised by the District Clerk to take place on the nineteenth (19th) day preceding the Annual Meeting and Election. Nominating petitions are available for anyone interested in serving the district as a school board member. Completed nominating petitions are due to the district Board Clerk by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1, 2024.
Policy 2121: BOARD MEMBER QUALIFICATIONS
Each member of the Board of Education shall have the following qualifications:
- Be a citizen and qualified voter of the district, and be able to read and write.
- Be a resident of the district for one year.
- Not an employee of the district unless otherwise permitted by law.
- Not hold office if a member of his/her family is a member of the Board. (Family has been interpreted to mean a member of the same household. Op. Attorney General, 1933, 48 St Dept. 779; Op. Attorney General, 1933, 48 St. Dept. 132).
- Not simultaneously be a member of the Board and an elected officer of the City of Poughkeepsie.
