Senior Signing Day gives Class of 2026 the star treatment
Poughkeepsie High School held its annual Senior Signing Day event Friday, as members of the Class of 2026 received the star treatment in recognition of their post-graduation plans.
More than 110 students signed up to be announced at the party, which was held in association with the Marist Liberty Partnerships Program and coordinated by Kelly Semexant, the district’s college and workforce readiness counselor.
The idea is to celebrate each senior’s future plans in the same style blue chip athletes are celebrated when announcing the team for which they will play, signing their name in a keepsake book while sitting in front of a Poughkeepsie High School backdrop, as their friends swarm the table with cameras rolling for photo and video.
Now in its fifth year, the signing day has become something students circle on their calendars for their senior year.
“We’re just celebrating each other,” valedictorian Israa Hadine said, noting it would be among the class’ last chances to gather as a group as their high school experience winds down. The party is not just for those attending four-year colleges, either. Everyone with a plan, be it a two-year school, trade school, military or job opportunity, is welcome to take part and have their turn.
Before the names were called, the students enjoyed games, stations where they could have their faces painted or receive temporary tattoos and photo booth stations. There was also plenty of free food, including pizza, cookies and drinks. Throughout, Executive Director of School Engagement Da'Ron Wilson served as D.J.
Of what makes the day special, salutatorian Aubrey Wood said, “I think it’s just the vibe of all your friends coming up to support you.”
