i-Ready Diagnostic Tool

A picture is worth a thousand words, and in education, information speaks volumes.

Data analysis can provide a snapshot of what studetns know, what they should know, and what can be done to meet their academic needs.  With appropriate analyssi and interpretatoion of data, educators canmake informed decisions that affect student outcomes.  This is why PCSD uses tools like the i-Ready Assessment throughout the year to determine what students know and are able to do, monitor student progress, and create an instructional growth plan to support students' needs.

  • The iReady assessment measures students' performance and progress in specific foundational skills for reading and mathematics.  Each of these "domains" tested by the iReady assessment are defined below.  The assessment is adaptive, meaning that as a student answers questions, the assessment will adjust to provide more complicated or more simplistic questions based on how they answered the question prior.  The results of the assessment are then shared with students and families and reviewed by teachers in order to determine an appropriate plan of study to support students individualized needs.

    Phonological Awareness

    Understanding that a spoken word contains distinct sounds

    Being able to distinguish the individual sounds in spoken words helps students connect sounds to written words

    Understanding of the relationships between the sounds of spoken language and the letters of written language

    Being able to make these connections quickly and easily helps students make sense of what htey are reading

    High-Frequency Words

    Recognition of words that appear often in the books that children read

    Being able to recognize these words automatically helps students read quickly and easily, which helps them make sense of what htey are reading

    Vocabulary

    Understanding the meaning of words

    Knowing the meaning of many words allows students to reach a deeper understanding of the message being communicated through writing

    Comprehension of Literature

    Understanding of what is being read in fictional text

    Being able to recognize the sequence of events, the characters, and otehr elements of a story, poem, or play helps students navigate increasingly complicated text

    Comprehension of Informational Texts

    Understanding of what is being read in nonfiction texts

    Being able to recognize the main idea, supporting details, and other elements of nonfiction helps students effectibely use informational resources they encounter in the real world.

    Numbers and Operations

    Mathematics skills often thought of as arithmetic

    Having a solid understanding of the values that numbers represent and being able to work with numbers to accurately calculate increases, reductions, and parts provides a solid foundation for more complex mathematical thinking.

    Algebra and Algebraic Thinking

    Ability to see number patterns and to use symbols to represent and solve problems

    Being able to apply algebraic thinking allows a student to make sense of a question and find a logical solution

    Measurement and Data

    Ability to collect, organize, and inerpret numerical information

    Being able to apply measurement and data skills helps a student make sense of complex numerical information

    Geometry

    Ability to recognize and analyze two- and three-dimensional shpes

    Being able to apply geometry skills helps a student develop spatial reasoning and understand how real life objects relate to one another

     

     

  • Students will take the assessments three times throughout the year in order to montor their progress and growth.  The following is a list of dates during which the assessments will be given to students in school:
