Together, We are Champions for Children in Poughkeepsie City Schools
Senior Signing Day has become an annual tradition at Poughkeepsie High School in which each soon-to-be graduate is treated like a star for as long as it takes to sign their name.
The celebration is held during school hours toward the end of each school year. The idea is to celebrate each senior’s future plans in the same style blue chip athletes are celebrated when announcing the team for which they will play, signing their name while sitting in front of a Poughkeepsie High School backdrop.
In a party atmosphere, complete with food and a DJ, each senior who has registered their future plans is called to the signing table, one by one, to sit down and write their name and plan in the district’s keepsake book. While they do it, their cheering friends are free to swarm them to take photo and video, documenting them like a star.
“It’s fun to see where everyone’s going,” Class of 2024 member Schuyler Birrittella said during her Signing Day. “I’ve been celebrating all my friends and all of the people that I’ve grown up with for my entire life.”
The party is not just for those attending four-year colleges, either. Everyone with a plan, be it a two-year school, trade school, military or job opportunity, is welcome to take part and have their turn.
“We know that not all of our students go to college and a lot of the time they feel like they’re not being celebrated,” said Kelly Semexant, the district’s college and workforce readiness counselor and the architect of the event. She noted, one year a student told her during the event he signed a contract with a construction company following an internship. “Why would I not celebrate that?”
Class of 2025 member Natalia Lopez called her Signing Day “bittersweet,” noting she hasn’t heard of another high school that does something similar.
“I’m glad that my school does. It gives everybody a chance to know where everybody’s going to move on to and where we’re going,” Lopez said. “We all grew up together. Seeing us all move into the next step of life, I really enjoy it a lot.”
