About Cancellations, Delays, and Emergency Early Dismissals

The Poughkeepsie City School District understands that the decision to open or close schools in inclement weather deeply impacts our families. To this end, we take the decision to open or close schools very seriously. We consider a number of critical factors in making this decision. At approximately 4:30 a.m., the Superintendent consults with the Director of Buildings and Grounds, Fleet weather service, and other school Superintendents in surrounding Districts to make a final decision by 5:30 a.m. as to whether schools will remain open or close during bad weather. We want to ensure that our families have clear, accurate, and timely communication throughout the process. By no later than 6 a.m., the information is posted on our website, a ParentSquare message is dispatched to families, and radio and television stations are notified.

Our top priority is the safety and security of our students. When closing or delay is announced, it affects all schools and programs of Poughkeepsie City School District, unless the closing or delay is due to an emergency situation specific to a particular building.

The ParentSquare automated calling system will notify families of any delays or closings.  The District website will display any closing or delay information on the front page of the website.

Emergency Early Dismissals

The District makes every effort to avoid emergency early dismissals. In the event of an emergency early dismissal, no elementary, middle, or high school student will be released until contact has been made with a parent or approved emergency contact person. Therefore, it is very important that all students’ emergency cards have accurate and updated information. Student emergency cards should be updated annually and whenever contact information changes.
