What is Proposition 2? Learn more about proposal on Tuesday's ballot

Posted Date: 05/18/26 (04:00 PM)

You may be aware, there's a Proposition on the Poughkeepsie district ballot this year separate from our annual budget proposal. But, you may be interested to learn more about it, as it provides the district flexibility to continue making general repairs and improvements to our buildings without adding to residents' tax burden.
Proposition 2 asks residents to allow the district to establish the “2026 Capital Reserve Fund,” a source of funding for the district to undertake general capital improvements, as-needed, outside of the specific projects formally approved by residents through resolutions.
The fund would have a maximum total of $20 million, to be raised through various sources that include, but are not limited to, state aid reimbursement, cost saving measures resulting in unexpended funds or fund balance, or other legally available funds of the district.
The district would not level any additional taxes on residents to specifically fill this fund, but the fund would allow the district more flexibility in utilizing unexpected funding sources as they become available.

The annual district budget vote and Board of Education Election is Tuesday, with polls open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Learn more at
