Poughkeepsie Middle School closed out last week with its inaugural Pioneer Unity Cup, a celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and an event emblematic of the school’s R.I.S.E. expectations. The event, held on Poughkeepsie High School’s football field, was anchored by a tournament of student-formed teams, but also included performances by the school’s cheerleaders, a rendition of the national anthem from student singers and other fun. Marist’s Liberty Partnerships Program and the Marist College men’s soccer team assisted, with the collegiate players and coaches offering guidance to the middle schoolers.Everyone who attended received a Marist College lanyard and the players were given snacks and medals. The winning team members earned gift bags from the LPP.
The tournament was preceded by a presentation from Community Schools liaison Gilbert Colon discussing the competition’s ties to Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs Sept. 15-Oct. 15. As he spoke, Colon translated key passages of his message.
“Today isn’t just about a soccer game,” he said. “It’s about unity, pride and celebration. … Soccer has a power to connect us. It’s a game that transcends borders, where everyone on the field, no matter their background, is united by the same goal: to work together, support each other, and play with everything we’ve got.”
Assistant Principal for Climate and Culture Danielle Green coordinated the event, which she said was “about more than just soccer.” The day was a part of the school’s PBIS, or positive behavioral interventions and supports, efforts, and Green explained how R.I.S.E. factored into the day.
“We demonstrate respect, as we learn about and celebrate culture; we stay involved by showing sportsmanship on the field and in the stands; we model responsibility; and through the support of our staff and security team, we ensure everyone’s safety,” she said. “This Unity Cup is a reflection of what is possible when we come together as one school community.”
