Smart Scholars summer bridge program exposes students to college experience

Posted Date: 8/04/25 (12:18 PM)

Students enrolled in the Smart Scholars Early College Performing Arts Academy participated in a two-week summer bridge program last month.
The first-of-its-kind early college program is a collaboration between the Poughkeepsie City School District, Dutchess Community College, and The Bardavon 1869 Opera House. Open to students entering ninth-grade, the four-year program gives students hands-on practice in the arts through specialized college-level classes and the ability to earn up to 24 college credits, while offering tutoring support and mentorship.
The summer bridge program allowed the students to take their first college course – Intro to the Performing Arts. They also enjoyed an overnight stay in the Dutchess Community College dorms, participated in a ceramics workshop, had access to a game room and were treated to a movie under the stars.
Dr. Janety Encarnacion, director of college readiness and workforce education, said, “It is important for our students to understand that college life includes academic rigor but also a rich social life and having fun is also part of it.
The Smart Scholars program began in fall 2024. This fall’s second cohort included 35 total students. It’s one of several opportunities offered by the district for students to get a jump on college courses and career training before high school graduation.
“We look forward to continuing to support a college-going culture,” Encarnacion said.
