Smith kicks off week of PCSD Trunk or Treat fun

Smith Elementary School on Friday kicked off a series of Halloween events around the Poughkeepsie City School District, holding its inaugural Trunk or Treat event.

Dozens of students and families came to the school to share in the fun – and the sweets. Cars lined the parking lot, beginning with a station manned by a feathered Principal Jessica Baruffo close to the school and a police vehicle and firetruck at the far end.

In addition to several parent volunteers, a broad range of community organizations hosted trunks and other giveaway areas for children to enjoy, including the school’s PTA, representatives from the City of Poughkeepsie police and fire departments, Dutchess County, Ampact, the Poughkeepsie Children’s Cabinet, Community Matters 2, Dutchess Pride, Girl Scouts, the Poughkeepsie Public Library District, The Institute for Family Health and the Mid-Hudson Discovery Museum. Community Schools coordinated with the groups and hosted a trunk, as well.

In the playground area, nearby Living Water Church provided a snack table with snow cones, popcorn and cotton candy, a bouncy house and face painting. Library mascot Rover was on hand, as was Hudson Valley Renegades mascot Rascal.

There’s more fun planned this week, with Trunk or Treat events for Truth and Krieger families Wednesday and Thursday evenings, respectively, before Clinton, Poughkeepsie Middle School and Warring hold events Friday.
