96% Demonstrating growth: How Ampact has elevated PCSD students

Posted Date: 09/19/26 (01:10 AM)

Last school year, 337 Poughkeepsie City School District students in grades K-3 received high-impact math tutoring through Ampact.

Of them, 96% demonstrated measurable growth and 82% showed substantial growth, meaning at least 20% growth in their math abilities.

Of Poughkeepsie’s 57 pre-K students receiving one-on-one or small group tutoring in Ampact’s Early Learning Corps program, 94% demonstrated measurable growth in literacy and numeracy, and 72% met their year-end targets in both those areas.

As it begins its fourth year as a tutoring partner to the Poughkeepsie district, Ampact’s impact as a tool for academic intervention and closing learning gaps continues to prove quantifiably valuable.

The program is beginning again this week, with tutors for both its Early Learning Corps and Math Corps programs set to reenter each district elementary building.

And, Ampact still has a couple of openings for community members to join the effort as AmeriCorps tutors.

The district held an orientation for this year’s tutors on Thursday in advance of the first sessions Monday.

In 2025-26, 17 AmeriCorps members served throughout the district; five in the Early Learning Corps program and 12 in Math Corps. The targeted intervention sessions expand upon their existing classes, not in place of a teacher’s regular instruction.

The Early Learning Corps program works toward preparing students for kindergarten through tutoring in a full classroom setting, as well as in small groups and one-on-one support, known as Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions, respectively. In addition to literacy and numeracy, the program participates in students’ social-emotional development and incorporates various language expansion strategies.

Of the 337 students in the Math Corps program, 271 received at least six weeks of Tier 2 or 3 support. The results far exceeded Ampact’s national averages for growth: Poughkeepsie’s percentage of students demonstrating measurable growth was 10% higher than average and its percentage of students with substantial growth was 24% higher than average.

In its first three years in Poughkeepsie, Ampact has served 1,122 students, with the number of students participating growing each year.
