Truth students enjoy sweet STEAM lesson in the Innovation Lab

Posted Date: 03/26/26 (03:29 PM)

Sojourner Truth Elementary students this week received a lesson in science with a side of sweets.
Each class visited the Innovation Lab to conduct a special experiment using Peeps marshmallow treats, which incorporated various elements of STEAM instruction.
Students began the lesson coloring their own Peep any design they wished and naming what its flavor would be. Then, they made predictions regarding if a Peep would sink or float when placed in water.
“Remember when we learned about things that are heavy and things that are light?” Alison Wenzel asked her kindergarten class. “What do you think a marshmallow is?” “Light!” several students answered excitedly.
After testing their prediction and cheering while seeing the results, the class moved on to their next assignment. Students were asked to draw designs for “Peep houses” and then executed them using jelly beans and toothpicks, practicing teamwork and planning. Separately, there’s also an experiment going in the lab to see when a Peep’s color will change when left in vinegar, apple juice, water and soda.
The activity allowed students to stretch creative muscles while learning about sinking, floating and scientific concepts of testing predictions and building structures.
And though students were asked to stick to science and art while inside the Innovation Lab, each group was able to bring a package of Peeps back to their classroom for an after-lesson snack.
