In math module 1 fifth grade has been focusing on place value. Scholars are able to use place value understanding to relate base ten units from millions to thousandths. We also explored exponents. We are able to apply exponents to denote powers of 10.

“I didn't know what exponents were. I now know that the exponent tells me how many times to multiply the ten.” Gabriela

“I learned how to add, multiply, and subtract decimals. I used the place value chart to do this.” Zaire

In ELA, we use the Engage New York Modules. Our first Module focuses on The Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This document was written in response to the events of World War II and the Holocaust. We are reading both fiction and information texts that scholars can connect to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  Scholars are encouraged to read 20 minutes each day! We all look forward to working as partners with our parents, during their scholar’s last year in elementary school.
