State floats, brochures on display at Krieger
Each fifth grade student for the program, now in its sixth year, researches a state, designs a shoebox diorama in the style of a parade float and creates a brochure containing key facts. They then present their states to their classmates before a culminating event in which the school’s fourth graders and the students’ parents can walk around looking at each presentation.

Students set to bring 'Willy Wonka Jr.' to the stage
Thursday, Jan. 23, 49 Krieger students will perform “Willy Wonka Jr.” for families, friends and community members. The two-act, one-hour show begins at 6 p.m. and the doors to the school open at 5:45 p.m. That show follows a pair of in-school performances scheduled for Jan. 22 and 23.

Yusuf House chess program teaches critical thinking skills
The program is facilitated by Yusuf House of the Hudson Valley and was open to all Krieger students. Pete Markman, a social worker at Highland High School served as the head instructor, assisted by his wife and two sons, who also teach. Each week for the first five weeks around 10 students stayed after school to get to know the game of chess.

Community Schools spelling bee draws 36 competitors
After several years without a broad district spelling bee, Community Schools held a competition for students in grades 3-5 March 21 at Poughkeepsie Middle School.

Budget development: Draft would invest in PK-5, transportation while staying under tax cap
While the budget draft provides a clear picture of how the district will augment the services and support offered to promote student achievement, district officials noted it is based on preliminary school aid totals projected by the state in January and will be adjusted when the final school aid numbers are available in April when the state’s 2025-26 budget is approved.

Geoffrey Canada, cradle-to-career innovator, to speak April 9
An innovator, whose approach to addressing intergenerational poverty through holistic community support is helping to shape transformational opportunities for Poughkeepsie’s youth, will speak at Sojourner Truth Elementary School.

Provide input on Smart Schools Bond Act plan
The district is proposing a plan in which it would use its remaining roughly $1.2 million to install new classroom and hallway clock and speaker displays and other classroom technology upgrades.

Marist Liberty Partnerships Program seeking 5th graders
The Marist Liberty Partnerships Program provides Poughkeepsie City School District students with academic, social and emotional support during grades 5-12. The program is seeking fifth grade students who fit the profile that would benefit most.

A letter from Dr. Eric Jay Rosser on Superintendent transition
Effective July 1, 2025, Mr. Greg Mott, assistant superintendent of elementary education, will serve as acting interim superintendent. The Board of Education will provide updates as it moves forward in selecting the district’s next superintendent.
