AFJROTC celebrates 10th anniversary
Just before school break to celebrate the holidays, the Poughkeepsie High School Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, or AFJROTC, celebrated the anniversary of the program’s official launch in December 2014 and the instructor who has been here since the beginning.

The team is preparing to compete in February at the National High School Cheerleading Championship at Walt Disney World Resort, fulfilling a longtime goal.

PHS student saves life using lesson learned in school
On Dec. 6, Victor Nelson III, a Poughkeepsie High School junior, saved a man from a drug overdose in a barbershop by administering Narcan. He had learned how to do it in Sean Lauder’s health class this semester. After the lesson, Lauder supplied each student two doses of Narcan and advised them to carry one around with them – you never know when you may need it.

Debate Club members take part in county Model UN
Five members of Poughkeepsie High School’s Debate Club spent Dec. 13 at Vassar College discussing and arguing complex issues and possible solutions relating to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.

PHS grad begins professional basketball career overseas
Davontrey Thomas, who starred on Poughkeepsie’s 2019 Class A boys basketball state championship team, joined Tbilisi State University (TSU), a pro team in the Georgia Superleague, in October. Thomas has scored in double figures in every game he’s played for TSU

Student journalists gain experience through Vassar partnership
A partnership between the Poughkeepsie High School and Vassar College student newspapers resulted in students gaining experience being edited by experienced peers and one student, Jhanae Stewart, seeing her article in print at the college.

Contreras brings community approach, smile to climate and culture role
Felix Contreras started in the role in July. It didn’t take long for him to ingratiate himself to the school community and win over students. Go to any school event and you’ll see him there, taking photos and talking with students, generally wearing a wide smile.

Athlete of the Month: Cheerleader put on a show in Disney World
Allysha Anderson performed in a parade in the Magic Kingdom Thanksgiving week after earning her place at a training camp in August.

PHS celebrates nearly 500 on Honor Roll with snacks
Poughkeepsie High School leadership held a reception Friday morning at which the 486 students who are on the Honor Roll were invited to take part in hot chocolate and cookies inside the revamped cafeteria, and make s’mores on a charcoal fire outside the building.

Athlete of the Month: Record swim highlights season for Martinez
After a season in which she broke a record, placed in the top-30 at the Section 1 Championships in two other events and was an all-league honoree, Renata Martinez was named Poughkeepsie’s Athlete of the Month for October.

College aid preparation underway; parent info meeting Wednesday night
While there are things to prepare to be accepted to colleges and obtain scholarships that can be done right now, the first major step in the financial aid process will come Wednesday during parent-teacher conference night, when College and Workforce Readiness Counselor Kelly Semexant will hold a financial aid informational session from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the Poughkeepsie High School library.

Football, cheer teams give back to community
Last month, members of teams visited the district’s elementary schools to read books with classes and individually with students. In September, the teams assisted at a performance of a play, “The Fateful Hour.”

Student-staff softball game sparks fun, charity
The school on Thursday held a fundraiser softball game titled “Battling Against Breast Cancer,” in which students took on staff in front of hundreds cheering in the stands.

Homecoming puts spirit on display
The rally marked the end of spirit week at the school, in which grade levels competed in decorating their hallways – the seniors took top honors – and students were encouraged to dress in themes, such as looking like your best friend on Tuesday and dressing in specific grade-dictated colors on Friday. The rally also marked the beginning of Homecoming Weekend, with the Homecoming Dance in the gymnasium Friday night and a home football game against Tuckahoe Saturday afternoon to cap the season.

Athlete of the Month: Hardin shows progress, leadership in cross country
Coach Jason Conrad said Hardin’s “focus and dedication” was being recognized in the honor in addition to his results; Hardin has registered the fastest times of any Poughkeepsie runners at most meets this season.

Progress in reducing chronic absenteeism; community survey available
Through December, the percentage of students characterized as chronically absent was down more than 18 percentage points compared to a year ago. And, two schools – the Early Learning Center and Krieger Elementary – have been honored as the first two winners of the district’s attendance incentive program.

Survey: How should 3 PCSD buildings be renamed?
The Poughkeepsie City School District Board of Education’s Ad-Hoc Committee Building Names Study Group will recommend three elementary school buildings – the Samuel F.B. Morse, Gov. George Clinton and Christopher Columbus schools – should be renamed. They're asking for the community's input on what the new names should be.

Poughkeepsie in spotlight at national Department of Education conference
Poughkeepsie Children’s Cabinet Executive Director Jill Gomez spoke at the two-day event’s opening plenary, and Community Schools Executive Director Natasha Brown and Interim Administrator Jessica Ortiz took part in workshops and operated a table at which they discussed the department’s work.

The Poughkeepsie City School District is launching the “Attendance Matters” awareness campaign, a communitywide effort to encourage every student to attend school regularly and have the best chance for success.
