Basketball, cheerleading given OK to start seasons
All the open gym sessions our basketball players and cheerleaders have been attending for the past few weeks are over as Section 1 teams officially begin their seasons Friday, Feb. 5.

Two students with PCSD connections are learning how to curate an art exhibit as part of The Art Effect’s pilot youth museum studies program at the Poughkeepsie Trolley Barn.

The Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley scholarship portal is open for high school seniors to submit their applications by April 1.

Virtual college fair debuts on website
Poughkeepsie High School students can explore more than 150 different colleges virtually, thanks to an effort to increase student opportunity and access as outlined in the District Annual Goals.

Last Thursday, Dr. Eric Jay Rosser, superintendent of schools, had the opportunity to host the first of four quarterly Superintendent Student Advisory Committee Meetings with Poughkeepsie High School students.

ReStore partners with PHS class for art lesson
Art offers many opportunities for students to display their talents and maximize their potential. PHS art teacher Debbie Lashlee took advantage of an offer from the Poughkeepsie Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore location to do just that.

PHS toy drive yields an abundance of gifts for kids
Though COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the “Cocoa, Cookies and Caroling” event to mark the end of Poughkeepsie High School’s first annual toy drive to support the John Flowers Christmas Wish, it couldn’t stop the donations.

Creation of reserve funds would help district in future
Interim Chief Operations Officer Bill Hogan recommended the Poughkeepsie City School District take additional steps toward multiyear financial planning Wednesday and establish three new reserve funds: one for future retirement costs (ERS and TRS), one for capital improvements, and the last for repairs.

District leadership is in the planning stages of developing an aspiring leaders program to provide opportunities for teachers, supervisors, coordinators, and assistant principals who are interested in expanding their capacity and understanding of effective school turnaround leadership.

Phase-in of hybrid learning continues on Tuesday
Students in grades 3-6 and 9 who opted in to hybrid instruction at all schools but Warring Elementary will begin in-person instruction on Tuesday, Feb. 16 given the President’s Day holiday Monday. Warring will resume in-person instruction Monday, Feb. 22, due to a positive COVID-19 case.

When the district made the myON digital library available to teachers and students in October to help them reach district reading goals, some students jumped right in and haven’t stopped.
