UPK students to receive new literacy learning book system

Residents speak out at building renaming town hall; Watch Replay
The Poughkeepsie City School District Board of Education’s Ad-Hoc Committee Building Names Study Group is tasked with researching the history of Poughkeepsie’s six elementary school buildings namesakes – including Christopher Columbus School, now serving as the administration building – evaluating how their impacts reflect the city’s current values, and suggesting if those names should stay or change.

7 Mindsets initiative makes impact in second year
Staff, students and parents alike can benefit from the 7 Mindsets training through monthly newsletters and activities. The next staff meeting is scheduled for Nov. 6.

Board receives construction, finances, support updates
At Wednesday night’s Board of Education Workshop Meeting, trustees and residents were updated on three key areas of the district’s operations, with presentations on capital project progress, finances and the Office of School Engagement.

PCSD recovers $2.4 million aid shortfall
The Poughkeepsie City School District last month received roughly $1.2 million from the state, a corrective payment to account for a shortfall in aid from the 2023-24 school year. As part of that correction, the state also increased its aid payment for the 2024-25 school year by another roughly $1.2 million.

Saturday Morning Lights returns; see what activities are available this year
The program, a Community Schools initiative, will be held every Saturday at Poughkeepsie Middle School through June 21. The day begins with breakfast at 8 a.m., followed by activities from 9 a.m. to noon. Lunch is also served.

Shoe truck visits PCSD as measure to bolster employee safety
In September, members of the district’s custodial and security teams were able to go shoe shopping – in the parking lot of the high school’s athletic complex.

Board sets Workshop meeting topics
Always the second meeting of the month, Workshop meetings are convened for the sole purpose of informal discussion on topics and the Board does not engage in any voting. Workshops allow the board to focus on topics of interest and the public to provide input.

New board liaison Stewart seeks to act as students’ voice
The senior said she won't be shy in advocating for the needs to students of all ages in the district, but also plans to help students see what good is being done by the board.
