PMS staff welcomes families, announces new PTA at orientation

More than 200 families visited Poughkeepsie Middle School Thursday for a sixth-grade orientation event.

The day was filled with excitement as students and parents met with teachers, school counselors and administrative staff to learn more about the upcoming school year.

Interim Principal Felicia Schinella offered a warm welcome.

“We are thrilled to have you all here and are committed to making this school year a positive and enriching experience for every student,” she said. The administration team, including Assistant Principals Julliet Coxum, Pierce White and Danielle Green, expressed their eagerness to support the sixth-grade cohort throughout the year.

Unsupported image type.The orientation covered essential information on school policies, including the dress code, attendance expectations and the new requirement that students store cell phones in Yondr pouches throughout the day to minimize distractions and promote a focused learning environment.

Additionally, counselors like Rachel Birsner and Takiyah Ingram were introduced as key resources for both academic and social-emotional support.

In a show of strong community and district support, representatives from Community Schools, the PTA president, and Dr. Charles Gallo, assistant superintendent of secondary education, were in attendance. Gallo underscored the district’s commitment to working collaboratively with families and staff to enhance the educational experience at PMS.

One of the highlights of the event was the launch of the new Poughkeepsie Middle School PTA. More than 30 parents signed up to join, showing enthusiasm and dedication to contributing to the school community. The initiative aims to foster strong partnerships between families and the school, ensuring every student has the resources and support they need to thrive.

The school administration and staff are excited about the opportunities this year will bring and look forward to a successful partnership with families and the community.
