Assistant Superintendent Gallo speaks at workshop on inequalities
Last weekend, Dr. Charles Gallo, assistant superintendent for secondary education, took part in a two-day workshop titled Promoting Partnerships to Advance Educational Justice in Poughkeepsie, facilitated by Vassar College. The program topics addressed educational inequalities affecting justice-involved youth in Poughkeepsie and Arlington, and explored solutions to the school-to-prison pipeline, focusing on justice-involved students and those experiencing disconnection during their K-12 journey.
The keynote speaker was Karmen Smallwood, Dutchess County's assistant commissioner for youth services. In that capacity, she works to enhance community assets by bridging research with practice and aligning efforts to provide the best array of resources, services and support for children and families.
Gallo participated in a panel discussion addressing youth criminal justice in schools and the community. He informed the group our students must have multiple opportunities for positive youth development in order to thrive. He highlighted with work of the Poughkeepsie Children’s Cabinet, which seeks to create and catalyze citywide systems of support that ensure all children, youth, and families thrive across all aspects of their lives, and preached the need for community-based support.
Gallo acknowledged the contributions of several in the school and city communities, including Community Schools Executive Director Natasha Brown, high school social studies teacher Sankung Susso, Smallwood, Angela Henry, Liz O’Rafferty and Gully Sanford.
