Saturday Morning Lights returns; see what activities are available this year
Saturday Morning Lights is returning Saturday with a full slate of activities for students and parents alike.
The program, a Community Schools initiative, will be held every Saturday at Poughkeepsie Middle School through June 21. The day begins with breakfast at 8 a.m., followed by activities from 9 a.m. to noon. Lunch is also served.
The idea behind Saturday Morning Lights is to extend student learning beyond the traditional school week by providing engaging academic enrichment opportunities.
This year’s activity categories, geared toward students in grades Kindergarten through 8 include but are not limited to:
- STEAM
- Health and Wellness
- Cooking
- Sports
- Dance
- Chess
- Music
- Marching Band
- Hair Braiding
Registration is open through Thursday and space is limited.
In addition, Interim Community Schools Administrator Jessica Ortiz said, “we’re offering this year parent workshops and parent activities, so the parents can stay and enjoy themselves while the kids are doing their own programs.”
Ortiz said the monthly parent workshops will focus on educational and empowerment areas, among others.
Several community business organizations are assisting in administering the programs.
