Family Festival offers fun, food and information

 last year's festival.

Poughkeepsie families looking for fun this weekend can enjoy themselves Saturday, May 14, at the “Spring into Community Schools” event, Poughkeepsie Central School District’s second annual Family Festival.

The first year’s event was a success, drawing in 200 families.

“We wanted to promote family bonding,” Executive Director of Community Schools Natasha Cherry said. “It was best to do it in a jovial fashion.”

Taking place on the track field from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., families can partake in various free activities such as carnival games, mask making, pony rides and watching student performances on stage including the cheer team. They can also learn about all the programs and services available to district families.

The district’s community partners will have tables presenting various resources available for families – including information on summer programming in the district.

Since children spend about 80 percent of their time out of school, what they experience during that time has a big impact on their lives, according to a Poughkeepsie Children’s Cabinet working group report.

Cherry is most looking forward to seeing every family in attendance bond.

“It’s just great seeing our families gathering together,” she said. “It’s very nice to see the smiling faces.”
