Task Force examines school pathways

Graphic showing how Pathways Transformation Initiative gives students choicesAs a part of the Poughkeepsie City School District’s five-year strategic plan to provide greater opportunities and access for district students to attain success in and out of school, district leadership held its first Pathways Transformation Initiative meeting. The Pathways Transformation Initative will be designed to connect students with specific interests to a concentration of study as early as elementary school and throughout their middle and high school matriculation. The intent of the pathways are to enable students to:

  • increase their depth of knowledge of a career path they are interested in,
  • participate in internships and/or other varied experiences associated with the career path, and
  • provide them with a solid foundation to embark on individual paths of success (college or career) in a globally diverse community beyond high school graduation.

A article said that about 2 billon jobs of today will be gone by 2030 which is about half of all jobs worldwide. “Sixty-five (65%) of children entering grade school this year will assume careers that don’t exist yet,” it said.

The Pathways Transformation Task Force made up of school and community representatives ranging from district staff, parents, community based organizations, higher education, and Dutchess BOCES. The Taskforce will have the responsibility of:

  • Helping inform programmatic pathways designed to lead post-secondary opportunities aligned to emerging industry and occupational fields throughout the Hudson Valley.
  • Assisting in the completion of a formal recommendation report, which will clarify the school and community needs, desires, concerns, and recommendations for pathways to be developed.
  • Assisting in the development of a “Pathways Survey” to be administered to students, parents, staff, community members and business partners.
  • Ensuring that all stakeholders have access to surveys and information to help inform pathway recommendations.
  • Assisting in keeping all stakeholders in the school and community well informed about the process and progress of the transformation during design, planning and implementation phases.
  • Continuing to serve in an advisory capacity through the design and implementation process.

Dr. Eric Jay Rosser, superintendent of schools, shared with the Task Force that PCSD Pathways must:

  • Create lifelong opportunity through alignment with local and national job growth in fields that offer career growth at multiple educational levels.
  • Align with the local and regional higher educational landscape.
  • Support local interest, addressing community priorities, and student and parent interests.
  • Offer diverse educational experiences to ensure that all students will have multiple secondary options.
  • Provide experiential learning (i.e. internships, in-class activities, field experiences) and leverage business, community, and higher education partnerships.
  • Allow PCSD to build upon a reputation for quality instruction, improving the overall reputation of the instructional program, and support a foundation for high academic expectations.


Task Force members articulated excitement in being a part of this initiative and what it will mean for students in their pursuit of a quality K-12 education and preparedness for post-secondary participation in a college or career of their choice.

The Task F orce will meet monthly and survey the community of parents, students, staff, and vested city of Poughkeepsie residents to help inform a recommendation to transform the instructional program so that alignment to college and career opportunities beyond the k-12 environment is more seamless.
