PHS Jazz Band Brings Home First Prize!

The Poughkeepsie High School Jazz Band took first place at the Music in the Parks festival in Bristol Connecticut on Friday afternoon!

Conducted by PHS Director of Bands Mr. Joseph North, fifteen students performed September, by Earth Wind and Fire, My Funny Valentine arranged by David Wolfe, and Puente Arriba by Robert Skiles.  The vocals for My Funny Valentine were performed by PHS senior Jasmine Garvin.  PHS music teacher Mr. Neal Grover assisted with the day's events.

The band won with a rating of "Superior" which is the highest rating possible in the competition!

The PHS band also won the "Esprit du Corps" award, for overall courtesy and best student conduct at the event.

In addition, tenth grade student Saniel Richards won the award for Best Jazz Improvisation.  Saniel is a pianist who especially admires Chick Corea, and Corey Henry.

The Poughkeepsie City School District is incredibly proud of this exceptional achievement on the part of our outstanding students and staff!
