Members of the Latino community are invited to Gather with Us, an event designed to introduce them to Poughkeepsie City School District and City of Poughkeepsie resources and staff. It is being held Thursday, Oct. 6, from 5-7 p.m. at Changepoint Church, 260 Mill St.
The free, family-friendly event will have kid-friendly activities provided by the Poughkeepsie Library, Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley and Esperanza Dutchess County Hispanic Organization, Inc.
Refreshments will be provided and free parking is available at the adjacent garage.
The event is designed to meet Julee Molina, the new bilingual public information officer, Mayor Rob Rolison, Superintendent Dr. Eric Jay Rosser, City Administrator Marc Nelson and John Penney, director of community engagement for the city along with city and district staff.
The event will also showcase what is planned for the future to help close the gap in information and resources available to help our Latino residents of all ages thrive.
Here’s some of what to anticipate:
A COVID-19 vaccine booster walk-in clinic will be on-site two hours before the event and continuing through the event.
Demonstration of Waverly software and devices to help people converse without language barriers.
Scholarship information for Latinos from the Community Foundations
Resources for Latino seniors and veterans
Resources for migrant families
Revolucion Radio will be broadcasting live from the event.
“This is a democratization of everyone and every organization in the city. There are no speeches, no formal presentations. People are invited to come in, hang out and ask questions,” Molina said, adding that nothing is being sold at the event.
“We plan to do this every year during Hispanic Heritage Month.”
