District increases outreach, launches incentive program to curb absences
The Poughkeepsie City School District is increasing outreach to find solutions for chronic absenteeism, and introducing an attendance incentive program beginning next month. The moves come as data from the first two months of the school year showed an increase in chronic absenteeism compared to the same period last year, but also an increase in the average number of students attending school daily.

Toy, coat, shoe donations wanted for holiday drive
Toy donation boxes will be in every school; coat and shoe donations can be brought to the Parent Empowerment Center. All items will be distributed at Community Schools' holiday celebration Dec. 20.

Community Schools to start food pantry in January
Community Schools in the process of creating an emergency food pantry at the Parent Empowerment Center at Poughkeepsie Middle School, with the goal of expanding to a second location at the Parent Empowerment Center at Warring Elementary School when construction is completed.

$12M capital reserve fund created; 2023-24 audit positive
The Poughkeepsie City School District Board of Education on Wednesday approved creating a $12 million capital reserve fund. It will translate to approximately $30 million in building upgrades, depending on the application of state aid. It comes on the same night the board was presented its 2023-24 external audit showing the district is in healthy financial standing, representing a reversal from past years.

Elementary realignment: Transportation included in revised plan
Poughkeepsie City School District officials Wednesday night will present to the Board of Education a revised plan to realign its elementary buildings that includes transportation for any student who lives more than a half-mile from their school.

Donuts with Dad returns to massive interest
The second year of the Donuts with Dad series began Oct. 3 with a record turnout of more than 80. The next event, in which parents can learn more about what's going on in their child's school while sharing food and games with them, is scheduled for Warring Elementary Nov. 14.
