Black History Celebration
The Black History Celebration by the Middle School Sister to Sister club will be held in the auditorium of the Middle School on Friday, February 22nd from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. SNOW DATE, February 28th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm

Mission

The mission of the Poughkeepsie Middle School community is to foster each child's intellectual, social and emotional development thereby enabling every child to become a productive, lifelong learner.

Our committed staff will model this, in cooperation with all elements of the community, ensuring developmentally appropriate education and support within a respectful, safe and caring environment.

Programs

The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS)

The NJHS is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle school students. More than just an honor roll, the NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character and Citizenship.

Student Council

Student council develops and trains future leaders of P.M.S. Council meetings run from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., announcements are made a day in advance of all meetings. Ms. Brooks, Ms. Follette and Mr. Acard are the advisors.

Science Olympiad

Science Olympiad is a program in which students compete with other schools in regional competition. If successful, the Science Olympiad team advances to the State contest. The Science Olympiad advisor is Mr. Farris. Science Olympiad team meetings occur in room 301 and announcements are made to notify students.

Science Fair

Mr. Farris is the advisor of the P.M.S. Science Fair. The Science Fair is an annual event that occurs in the spring. All students are encouraged to participate in the Science Fair and should check with their teachers about how their projects will be graded.

Math Counts

This NATIONWIDE math program is coached by Ms. Kardas and students compete against students from other area schools. The ‘nationals’ are held in Washington, D.C. This sport is open to 7th and 8th graders and meets on Tuesdays in room 220.

Homework Center

Under the direction of Mr. Grey, the homework center meets Monday thru Thursday in room 104 from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. This provides our P.M.S. students an opportunity to begin homework and receive assistance in any or all of their classes.

Winter/Spring Concert

The Winter/Spring Concert includes performances by the P.M.S. band and orchestra.

School Store

The School Store is open to all students in the morning during homeroom and after-school. The store is stocked with all of the supplies that our students will need to be successful during their time in P.M.S. The school store is supervised by Ms. Wendover and she has students working in the store on a daily basis.

Yearbook

Students should listen to the morning and afternoon announcements for information regarding the yearbook. Ms. Healey is the advisor.

Interscholastic Athletic Teams

Poughkeepsie Middle School offers a variety of modified (7th and 8th Grade) sports teams that change with the seasons. Soccer, Football and Volleyball are in season in the fall, while Basketball and Swimming occur in the winter. The spring provides our students an opportunity to play Baseball, Softball and Track. Announcements are made informing students about try-out dates for each sport. Student-athletes are also required to get a physical and turn in emergency cards to their coaches before they are allowed to participate in any events.

Intramurals

Intramurals are supervised by Mr. Murphy and occur approximately three or four days a month in the Fall and Spring. All students are encouraged to participate in intramural Basketball whenever they can. Announcements are made informing the students about the grade level(s) that will be allowed to enter intramurals daily.
